Renting a PG in Guwahati in the monsoon: waterlogging, power and what to ask
Updated November 2026 · 5 min read
Guwahati gets heavy rain through the monsoon, and some low-lying parts of the city flood after just a few hours of it. A PG that looks fine on a dry afternoon can be cut off on a wet evening. Here is how to check a house before the rains, not during them.
Know which lanes flood
Local reporting and the city's own drainage plans name the same pockets year after year: Zoo Road, Chandmari, Hatigaon, Anil Nagar and Nabin Nagar are regularly mentioned for waterlogging, as are the roads around Zoo Road Tiniali, Lachit Nagar and Silpukhuri. That does not rule these areas out — many PGs there sit on raised plinths or higher lanes — but it does mean you should ask.
Ask the owner and a current resident one direct question: did water reach the gate, the ground floor or the road outside last monsoon, and for how long?
Check the house itself
Go through this on your visit — ideally on a rainy day.
- Ground-floor rooms: is the plinth raised above the road? Look for water marks on walls and doors.
- Your route: can you still reach your campus or office by bus or auto when the main road is under water?
- Power backup: does the inverter or generator run fans and Wi-Fi, or only lights? Rain often means power cuts.
- Drinking water: is there a purifier, and is it serviced? Ask where the water comes from.
- Mosquitoes: stagnant water breeds them. Ask about window nets, and whether the owner clears water from rooftops and tanks.
- Laundry: is there a covered drying space? Clothes take days to dry in monsoon humidity.
- Damp: look for mould on walls and cupboards in the room you are offered, not just the show room.
Timing your move
The rains usually set in around June and ease by late September. If you can, visit the PG after a rainy spell. One wet-evening visit tells you more than any photo.
If you are moving in July or August for college, book the visit for a weekday evening so you see the house, the road and the commute at their worst.
Put it in writing
Ask what happens if your room gets water damage or there is no power for long stretches — is there a backup room, or a rent adjustment? Get the answer in your rental agreement and keep a receipt for every payment. On PGkaro, rent goes straight to the owner and every payment gets a receipt.
Common questions
- Which months is the monsoon in Guwahati?
- Roughly June to September, with heavy pre-monsoon showers often starting in April and May. Waterlogging is most common after long, heavy spells in those months.
- Should I avoid PGs in Zoo Road or Anil Nagar?
- Not automatically. These areas are central and well connected; some lanes flood and others don't. Ask about last monsoon, look at the plinth, and check your route to work or college on a rainy day.
